British business Reckitt Benckiser owns the condom and personal lubricant brand Durex. The London Rubber Company and British Latex Products Ltd., under whose watch it was invented, produced it between 1932 and 1994 in London. In 1915, the London Rubber Company was established, and in 1929 the Durex brand name (which stands for “durability, reliability, and excellence”) was introduced. However, London Rubber didn’t start producing their own brand of condoms until 1932, when they teamed up with a Polish student of rubber technology named Lucian Landau. In September 2020, McGill-University Queen’s Press released Jessica Borge’s book, The London Rubber Company and the History of Durex Condoms.

Later, LRC amalgamated with SSL International, which is now owned by the Anglo-Dutch conglomerate Reckitt Benckiser as of 2010. It has 30 percent of the international condom market, making it one of the most popular brands available. In 2006, Durex condoms trailed only Trojan condoms in popularity among American consumers. Karex, among others, is a supplier of this item.

In 2007, the last facility in the United Kingdom producing Durex condoms shut down, and since then, manufacture has shifted to China, India, and Thailand.
