There’s almost a T-shirt feeling to wearing my evening dresses

Why is it called a T-shirt?

The T-shirt is one of the most commonly worn garments in the world. Named for its T-shaped silhouette, the T-shirt originated as an undergarment in the late 19th century. New York inventor Elias Howe is credited with patenting the first T-shirt-like garment in 1851, but it was not until 1913 that the T-shirt as we know it today was first patented.

T-shirts gained popularity in the 1920s as a comfortable and practical alternative to traditionalbutton-down shirts. They became even more popular during World War II, when they were issued as standard underwear for American soldiers. Today, T-shirts are available in a wide range of styles and are worn by people of all ages, from young children to retirees. Whether plain or embellished, T-shirts remain one of the most versatile and popular items of clothing ever invented.
