The desire for improved sleep began with one small spool of thread. This journey began with giving a spool of thread to a mattress factory in Derbyshire. From there, their family thread business grew and started to penetrate into the different homes in the world. Today, their thread has been used in more than 50 million mattresses in more than 35 countries. The bedspread or the sheet you are using to cover your bed or the mattress you are sleeping on tonight might have been made from their thread. In 2002, they asked themselves a simple yet transformative question: why don’t they use this thread to make their own mattresses? This led them to diversify into mattress design and supply and the company was to grow and develop over the next decade. The venture was very successful and was able to sell more than 1 million mattresses. But they did not stop at that. They launched themselves with a new mission—to create a new mattress, which was a high-technology product, cost effective and could replicate the human body and provide support.

For this purpose they create a team of specialists in design, foam and springs. Together, this team had one mission: as a guide to the right mattress for a good night’s sleep. They first used foam and then tried to use polyurethane foam, high density foam, synthetic foam and natural foam until they arrived at the right one. But they knew that they could get a form of a foam structure which is way above the average. Their main innovation was the AeroCoil® spring which was considered as a big step towards the future of the company. With one of the world’s leading manufacturers of springs, they designed a conical pocket spring that could be located in a rolled mattress. But they also knew that comfort is not only about support, which is why the design of the chairs was very important. To ensure that the sleepers remain cool at night they developed Simbatex® foam which is a highly specialized foam that has an open cell structure thus allowing for air circulation. Using graphite, a naturally occurring mineral, incorporated into the Simbatex® fabric, the material is able to dissipate the excess heat away from the body for a cooler nights sleep. The designs that they have come up with were not just theoretical, but practical ones that are applicable in the field. They leveraged data from over 10 million body profiles comprising of 180 million data points to create the perfect mattress. They continued on testing and trying out various methods in order to arrive at the most appropriate product that they could present to the market. They also altered the memory foam that is placed below the mattress to be more open to air and also made the spring core to be softer to conform to the body of the sleeper.

This is the story that they have given so far but there is much more to it. They remain dedicated to the mission of enhancing the well being of people – one night of sleep on a comfortable mattress at a time.
